I don’t know about you, but I’ve often been told to be myself during my upbringing. I’m willing to bet you have as well, we most likely have all heard this fairly common and widely accepted saying.
But what does “being yourself” really mean?
Well, nobody really knows, however, I do know how many people interpret it. The unfortunate reality is that many people end up using this as an excuse for remaining in their comfort zone. One thing’s for sure; if you stay in your comfort zone, unless your dreams and greatest goals are right there in your comfort zone with you, you just simply won’t end up achieving them. This commonly told saying is sadly often used to excuse fear, and to paraphrase the renown entrepreneur and real estate investor Grant Cardone, fear is often an indicator that you’re doing the right thing.
And what should we do about it?
The fact of the matter is that the saying, in and of itself, is harmless, the danger lies in the interpretation (on a side note, this can be said for many different situations). I firmly believe that modern society has engineered us to believe that we are predestined to a life of mediocrity. The reality, of course, is that this is not even close to the case, you and I can achieve almost anything we set our minds to, we just have to approach things with the right mindset. Similarly, this saying should be approached with the right mindset.
I would like to expand upon the original saying in order for it to appropriately apply to today’s society, where anything is possible. Here is the new and, in my opinion, improved saying:
You decide who you are, what you will achieve and how you will be remembered. Be yourself, but define who you are, and strive to become who you want to be.
After all is said and done, everything comes down to how you perceive your life, be satisfied with mediocrity and you will be mediocre, strive for greatness and you will be great. Dear reader, the fact that you are here in the first place shows that you’re striving for greatness, you’re on track, persevere and achieve your dream goals!
